Readers' Choice: Gran-Val Scoop is the Granbys' Favorite Place to Get Ice Cream

Family owned business in Granville, MA, wins in a landslide.

It’s Gran-Val Scoop in a landslide as The Granbys Patch Readers’ Choice of the favorite place to get ice cream.

Indeed, the Granville, MA-based business garnered 588 out of the record-high 706 votes that were cast in the poll. Tina’s Ice Cream of Granby placed second with 85 votes.

Its secret? The quaint country shop that’s been open for 21 years features some 24 to 30 different flavors of homemade ice cream, according to long-time employee JoAnn Carl.

Among the favorites flavors are vanilla, Oreo, M&M and moose tracks, Carl said. In addition, there are seasonal flavors that feature locally grown fruit, like peach, blueberry and rhubarb and other products like maple syrup.

People also like to come out to the ice cream shop for its down-home atmosphere; the business is located on land that used to be a working farm that now serves as a petting zoo, Carl said.

“It’s rural for people who are looking to take a trip out to the country,” said Carl. “People like to come out and look at the animals.”

The Gran-Val Scoop is also a family business that’s owned and run by Dick Brown and his daughter, Avola Berndt.

“It’s a great family to work for,” Carl said.

The Gran-Val Scoop is located at 233 Granby Road (Rte. 189) in Granville. For more information, visit its website here.
