GREENWICH, CT — A 39-year-old Greenwich woman has been charged with risk of injury to a child after police say she left two young children unattended in an apartment.

Police responded to a report of an unsupervised child, later confirmed to be 5 years old, walking on a public roadway at approximately 11:50 a.m. on May 17 in the Chickahominy section of town, according to the woman's arrest report.

The child left the roadway and entered a residence through an open second-floor door, police said. Officers then found two young children inside the apartment without adult supervision.

"Further investigation revealed that the children’s caregiver had left the residence unattended while she went to another part of the property," police said in a news release. "Evidence gathered during a follow-up visit — including body-worn camera footage and a walkthrough of the premises — indicated that the caregiver was not in the laundry area, as initially claimed, but had become distracted during a conversation elsewhere on the property."

Police said the children were left unsupervised for at least 12 minutes.
