3 Rescued After Sailboat Runs Aground Off Greenwich Coast: Police

A 70-foot sailboat ran aground off the Greenwich coast on Saturday, according to police.

GREENWICH, CT — Three people were rescued from a sailboat on Long Island Sound Saturday morning after the vessel got caught up in a rocky area, according to the Greenwich Police Department.

The GPD Marine Unit received a call just before 10 a.m. about a 70-foot sailboat that had run aground on the rocks known as "Hens and Chickens" directly east of Island Beach, police said.

Arriving officers found three people onboard who were unharmed, however, the sailboat was unable to free itself from the rocks, police said.

"In the interest of safety, our officers promptly assisted in evacuating the personnel from the aground vessel," police said. "They were safely transported back to land via Greenwich Police Boat 139, ensuring their well-being throughout the process."

Salvage operations by Sea Tow to remove the vessel are expected to continue into the late evening, according to police.

"We kindly remind all boaters in the area to please avoid creating large wakes, as this will facilitate the ongoing removal efforts," police said. "We appreciate the cooperation of our community and wish to thank the professionals involved in ensuring the safety of everyone."
