American Diabetes Association Hosts Senior Signature Series in Greenwich

MARCH 2016/ GREENWICH, CT: The American Diabetes Association is continuing its efforts to Stop Diabetes® by facilitating a series of diabetes education workshops for the community of Greenwich. The focus of these initiatives is to develop strategies for managing diabetes for people living with the disease and prevention for those at risk.

The American Diabetes Association will be hosting the Senior Signature Series beginning March 24th at Greenwich Senior Center at 1:15 PM. Attendees will learn important information about diabetes and how they can become a part of the largest national movement to raise awareness and understanding of diabetes, its consequences, management and prevention of type 2 diabetes.

The eight-week series will include:

1. Diabetes 101

2. Healthy Food Choices

3. Getting Physical

4. Complications Diabetes and Neuropathy Diabetes and Proper Foot

5. Diabetes and Depression

6. Diabetes and Caregiving

American Diabetes Month Facts and Figures:

· Nearly 30 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes.

· 86 million Americans have pre-diabetes and are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

· Two out of three people with diabetes die from heart disease or stroke.

· Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure.

· Diabetes is the leading cause of new cases of blindness among adults.

· The American Diabetes Association estimates that the total national cost of diagnosed

diabetes in the United States is $245 billion.

· One in five health care dollars is spent caring for people with diabetes.

The American Diabetes Association Patron Reception for the 2016 Change the Future Chef Event will be held at Miller Motorcars' Ferrari Maserati Showroom. Among those in attendance will be the co-chairs: Taylor Kearns, Shelly Tretter Lynch and James Parker.

Great plans are in motion for the main event on November 15, 2016. Master Chefs will prepare a unique and interactive multi-media farm-to-plate culinary experience at the Greenwich Country Club. The evening will include a reception featuring exquisite hors d’oeuvres and aperitifs followed by a seated five-course dinner with wine pairings.

Through a live feed from the kitchen to the ballroom, guests will be able to participate in a cooking adventure in real time, guided by Master Chefs including Chef Rui Correia of Douro Restaurant, Chef Frederic Kieffer of l'escale, Chefs Lisa and Stephen Maronian of Sweet Lisa's, Chef Edward Varipapa of Leon's Restaurant, and Chef Marc Weber, of On the Marc with more to be announced. This gathering of talented and entertaining chefs will benefit the American Diabetes Association and its STOP DIABETES campaign.
