Another 5 Luxury Vehicles Stolen In Greenwich This Weekend: PD

Greenwich Police Chief Heavey offers a warning; several towns in Fairfield County have been plagued by vehicle thefts in recent months.

GREENWICH, CT — Luxury vehicle thefts continue to plague Greenwich and other Fairfield County communities, with five such vehicles being swiped from Greenwich homes over the weekend, according to police.

A total of eight vehicles have been stolen in Greenwich in November alone, said Lt. John Slusarz, almost all of which were unlocked and with the keys inside.

"It's mostly young people coming down and taking these vehicles," said Slusarz, adding that the suspects have been as young as 15 years old. "They have no fear, and have been engaging in some high-risk behavior."

On Saturday, a 2015 Land Rover Range Rover was reported stolen from a home on Harbor Drive, and 2017 Audi S6 was taken from a driveway on Willow Road. And on Sunday, a 2008 GMC Sierra and a 2012 Honda Pilot were taken from homes on Hollow Wood Road, and 2017 Chevrolet Cruz was stolen from a home on Monica Lane.

"There is intelligence that there are several organized gangs that are committing these crimes, including at least one from Waterbury," said Slusarz. New Canaan police recovered at least one stolen BMW in Southbury, and the theft resulted in the arrest of three juveniles.

Greenwich Police Chief Jim Heavey, who offered a warning to residents about car thefts over the summer, issued the following statement on Monday:

Greenwich and surrounding areas have seen a dramatic increase of vehicle thefts over the past several months. In the first two weeks of November, 8 vehicles were stolen from our Town. All of these vehicles had two things in common: they were unlocked and they had their keys in them.

While no one single person or group is responsible for all of the thefts, what we do know is that those involved are typically between the age of 15 and 21. They can be male or female and of any race. They often engage in other criminal activity while in Greenwich, such as burglaries and larcenies. They generally have little regard for the safety of others and will often run from police. Many have crashed stolen cars injuring themselves and others.

I am asking for everyone’s help in stopping these crimes today, by following these simple tips to protect your vehicles.

How to protect your vehicle

  • Don't leave your keys in your car.
  • Close your windows and lock your doors whenever you leave your car, regardless of how long you plan to be gone.
  • Park in well-lit areas.
  • Keep your car in a garage if you have one.
  • Use an anti-theft device whenever you leave your car.
  • Immediately report any suspicious activity to the police.
  • Hide your valuables.

Thank you
