Charles Bickell, 91: Greenwich Special Police Officer, Custodian

Charles (Charlie) E. Bickell Jr., a longtime resident of Greenwich, passed away in San Antonio, Texas on August 23, 2016 at the age of 91. He was born in Greenwich to the late Charles E. and Edna Bickell on December 4, 1924.

Charlie was educated in Greenwich public schools and worked for the Board of Education for over 30 years as a custodian at North Mianus School and a bus driver for Special Education students. He then worked for many years as a police officer in the Belle Haven and Field Point Park communities before retiring to Florida in 1993. Charlie served in the Army National Guard in the 192nd Field Artillery Battalion in Greenwich from 1946 to 1950 and attained the rank of Corporal.

He was active in the Greenwich community and served as a Special Police Officer for 25 years where he attained the rank of Sergeant. Charlie was a longtime member of American Legion Post 29 and played the trumpet in the American Legion Drum Corps for many years. Charlie was predeceased by his loving wife of 67 years, Betty, a brother Richard and sisters Florence and Elsie. He is survived by his children Elizabeth Anne Hoover (Curt), Scott (Michelle) and grandchildren Sean and Jessica Bickell and Sarah Hoover. He is also survived by his brother Norman and his wife Jean, sister Violet, and many nieces and nephews. Charlie will always be remembered for his sense of humor and the smiles he brought to everyone he met. A graveside service will be held in Greenwich at a later date to be announced.
