GREENWICH, CT — The Greenwich Police Department released details on next month's St. Patrick's Day Parade.

The 46th annual parade will begin at 2 p.m. on March 20 from the Greenwich Town Hall southern parking lot. The parade will head north to West Putnam Avenue, then proceed east to Greenwich Avenue. Marchers will continue south on Greenwich Avenue to Steamboat Road, where they will disband.

Parking restrictions will be in effect starting at 10 a.m. There will be no parking on the east side of Greenwich Avenue from West Putnam Avenue to Steamboat Road. In addition, there will be no parking on the west side of Greenwich Avenue from Bruce Place (the Greenwich Commons Park) to Steamboat Road.

Dayton Avenue will be closed at noon from Field Point Road to the supermarket entrance to facilitate the parade trucks, floats and other parade elements, the GPD said.

The GPD will strictly enforce the parking restrictions, and vehicles illegally parked will be towed.
Road closures will occur throughout the downtown area, beginning at approximately 1:30 p.m. in preparation for the parade elements. Police officers and detour signs will facilitate traffic flow in the downtown area.

West Putnam Avenue will be closed for the parade from Dearfield Drive to Lafayette Place from 1:45 p.m. until approximately 3 p.m.

Roads will be reopened after the parade passes and the area is safe for travel.

This will be the first St. Patrick's Day Parade since 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic postponed the last two years.

St. Patrick's Day Events Publicity Chairman James Dougherty told Patch last month he's excited to see the parade back in action after a long layoff.

"It's been frustrating going through all the planning and getting everything lined up and all set to go and having to cancel it both years," Dougherty said. "This year it looks like we're on no matter what, so we're really excited to make it happen."

Dougherty said the parade should look similar to those in past years.

"We hope it's business as usual. We've reached out to all groups and bands who have marched in the past. So far it looks like we're getting a good response. Two years off gave us time to research and look into new bands," Dougherty said.

Former Greenwich Selectman John Toner will serve as the grand marshal; he'll be honored during the Hibernian Association's St. Patrick's dinner dance on March 5. Toner was chosen as the grand marshal of the postponed 2020 and 2021 parades.

Parade information and updates will be posted on the Greenwich Hibernian's website.
