GREENWICH, CT — A Greenwich family is mourning the loss of their nephew, Aryeh Ziering, a captain in Israel Defense Forces (IDF), who was killed in the early hours of last weekend's attack on Israel by the terrorist group Hamas, multiple media reports said.

A member of the K9 unit for the IDF, Ziering was one of the first to head south from Tel Aviv as the attack from Hamas began on Oct. 7. He was 27.

"He had his whole life ahead of him. We're gonna really miss him. He was a wonderful kid," said Ziering's aunt, Debby Ziering, a Greenwich resident, according to CBS News. Debby is the sister of Aryeh's father, Mark.

The family moved to Israel years ago, but Aryeh spent summers with family in the northeast, CBS News reported.

"He was smart, he was handsome, he had it all and it's just such a pity that a life was lost. It's a real loss for all of us," Debby told USA Today.

Debby has plans to head to Israel to be with her family despite the danger, USA Today reported.

On Tuesday, President Joe Biden said the number of Americans who have been killed in the fighting had reached 14, and some 20 Americans remained unaccounted for in the region.
