Greenwich Business Gets 8th Offense In Tobacco Compliance Checks: PD

Police and state officials on Wednesday conducted unannounced tobacco compliance checks at 18 businesses in town.

GREENWICH, CT — The Greenwich Police Department in conjunction with state officials on Wednesday conducted unannounced compliance checks at 18 retail establishments across town that sell tobacco and electronic cigarette products, and one business received its eighth offense, according to police.

The GPD's Community Impact Section along with the CT Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, as well as the Tobacco Prevention and Enforcement Program, checked the businesses by sending in an underage youth to purchase tobacco products.

Of the 18 businesses inspected, 17 were found to be in compliance.

However, Mohegan Vape and Cigar, located at 1255 E. Putnam Ave., was found to be in violation of CT General Statute Sec. 53-344(b) – sale of tobacco to a person under 21, police said. This marks the eighth offense for the business.

The clerk responsible for the sale was issued an infraction summons in the amount of $300, and the cigarette dealer license holder is now subject to potential administrative sanctions from the Department of Revenue Services, police said.

"The Greenwich Police Department thanks all participating agencies for their ongoing efforts to protect the health and safety of youth in our community," police said in a social media post. "Compliance checks like these are essential to deterring illegal tobacco sales and ensuring that businesses uphold their responsibility under the law."
