GREENWICH, CT — A New York man is facing several charges stemming from a carjacking that occurred in the Riverside section of Greenwich in May.

Gregory Jefferson, of The Bronx, N.Y., was arrested in New York and extradited from Riker's Island back to Connecticut on Nov. 7 where he's charged with risk of injury to a child; first-degree larceny; second-degree robbery; and conspiracy charges, according to the Greenwich Police Department.

On May 2, police responded to a report of a stolen vehicle from the Riverside Commons Shopping Center. An investigation found that two men started talking to the driver and a passenger in a Honda Civic while they were sitting in the McDonald's parking lot on East Putnam Avenue next to the shopping center, police said.

The two men claimed they needed help charging their phones and needed a ride to the train station, police said, and they were allowed into the car.

The group went over to the shopping center because the driver wanted to get something from one of the stores. When the driver left the car, the two men told the passenger, who was a minor, to get out, police said.

After the passenger exited, the two men fled the scene with the car which was recovered on a later date and returned to its owner, police said.

Following a "thorough" investigation, police identified Jefferson as one of the suspects and an arrest warrant was obtained.

Jefferson was given a court-set bond of $175,000, and is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 21.

Police said no other arrests have been made at this time.
