Greenwich Fire Department Seeks Images, Video Of May 19 Blaze

A fire broke out on upper Greenwich Avenue late in the morning on May 19.

GREENWICH, CT — The Greenwich Fire Department is asking the public for images and videos of the May 19 fire that occurred on upper Greenwich Avenue.

The department made the request on Facebook over the weekend, asking anyone with footage of the blaze to email mark.dawson@greenwichct.org.

On May 19 shortly before 12 p.m., units responded to a fire in the area of 24 Greenwich Ave.

Fire crews arrived within minutes and located a “fast-moving” fire in the rear of the structure, the GFD said. A police officer who as already on foot in the area assisted in evacuating people from the building. The officer later went to Greenwich Hospital for the treatment of smoke inhalation, police said.

Members quickly deployed hose lines and searched for any occupants within the building.

All occupants evacuated safely and crews worked for less than an hour to bring the fire under control, the GFD said, noting that damage was contained to the rear decking and roof. One firefighter sustained minor injuries, the GFD said.

Putnam Avenue was closed at Deerfield and Lafayette Place, as was the upper portion of Greenwich Avenue.

The area reopened in the afternoon.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Fire Marshal’s office.
