Greenwich Superintendent, GHS Headmaster Issue Statements On Student Killed By Train: Update

The incident occurred just after midnight Sunday in Cos Cob.

GREENWICH, CT — Greenwich Schools Superintendent Sal Corda and Greenwich High School Headmaster Chris Winters issued the following statements Monday morning about the 17-year-old student killed over the weekend by a train:

"We were saddened to learn yesterday of the untimely death of one of our Greenwich High School students from the Class of 2018 (a current junior)," said Corda. "Headmaster Chris Winters convened the GHS crisis team at the high school on Sunday to coordinate support for the family, and our students and staff."

Added Winters, "We are all grieving this tragic loss and our hearts go out to the student’s family and friends. We notified students and parents of this tragedy on Sunday afternoon, and advised them that our mental health staff will be available all day today to assist any student or family that may need support. Students were also advised that if they feel unable to take a final exam to meet with his/her guidance counselor to discuss options. Decisions about deferring final exams will be handled on a case-by-case basis."

The name of the student is not being released, and no other details are available at this time, said both district officials and Greenwich police.

The male student was killed just after midnight on Sunday along the northbound tracks near the Cos Cob station, and both the Greenwich and Metropolitan Transit Authority police responded to the scene.

MTA police subsequently took over the investigation.

"Our sympathy goes out to the family and friends of this youth," wrote Greenwich police.
