Greenwich Hospital Doctor To Retire After Four Decades Of Care
Dr. Philip J. McWhorter announced he will retire on Nov. 30, Greenwich Hospital said in a news release.

GREENWICH, CT — After four decades of care with Greenwich Hospital and Northeast Medical Group, Dr. Philip J. McWhorter announced he will retire on Nov. 30, according to a news release from Greenwich Hospital.
McWhorter began his 44-year medical career in July 1977 at Greenwich Hospital as an attending surgeon. He became chief of surgery in the 1990s and remains in that role to this day. Throughout his career, he served on almost every medical and administrative committee including appointments as the chief of the medical staff for three terms and the Greenwich Hospital Board of Trustees for nine years.

"Greenwich Hospital is extremely grateful to Dr. McWhorter for his surgical expertise and the compassion he has shown to his patients,” said Greenwich Hospital President Diane Kelly in a news release. "We will miss him and wish he and his family all the best on this new chapter in his life."
In 2019, McWhorter received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Fairfield County Business Journal for his devotion to providing quality patient care and mentoring the next generation of surgeons, including his son, Dr. Peter McWhorter.

Greenwich Hospital described McWhorter as a "consummate professional who is willing to come in at all hours to perform surgery, relieve a tired colleague or provide advice during a particularly complex case."
McWhorter grew up on an apple farm in Washington County, N.Y., according to a news release. He graduated in 1969 from St. Lawrence University, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest academic honorary society, and a member of Omicron Delta Kappa, the national leadership honor society.
He was a star athlete in football, basketball and baseball, and was inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame. A 1973 graduate of Cornell University Medical College, McWhorter completed his surgical residency and fellowship at New York Hospital and Memorial-Sloan Kettering.
McWhorter lives in Greenwich with Linda, his wife of 55 years. The couple has three children and six grandchildren.
