Greenwich Hospital Receives Prestigious Designation

Greenwich Hospital was one of seven hospitals in Connecticut to receive the recognition, according to a recent announcement.

GREENWICH, CT — Greenwich Hospital has earned Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center for the third time, placing it among about 10 percent of the more than 6,000 hospitals nationwide, and one of seven in Connecticut, to receive the recognition, according to an announcement.

The hospital first achieved Magnet designation in 2016 and was awarded re-designation in 2021, making it one of four hospitals in the state to earn the designation three or more times.

Magnet recognition is considered the gold standard for nursing excellence and is a factor used by the public to evaluate health care organizations. U.S. News & World Report includes Magnet recognition in its criteria for ranking inpatient care quality in its annual "America’s Best Hospitals" list.

The Magnet Recognition Program also evaluates organizations for quality patient care and innovations in professional practice, with appraisers reviewing nursing leadership and staff empowerment, a culture of safety, the quality of nursing practice, and the best practices nurses develop and share to deliver safe patient care.

As part of the designation, Greenwich Hospital was awarded 10 Magnet exemplars, which are practices or programs considered worthy of imitation for highlighting excellence in nursing practice and positive outcomes. In 2021, the hospital received six exemplars.

"This accomplishment reflects the outstanding teamwork, perseverance and clinical skill our nurses and care teams demonstrate every single day," said Greenwich Hospital Chief Nursing Officer Anna Cerra in a recent announcement. "We are extremely proud to be among a select group of hospitals nationwide recognized for their unwavering commitment to nursing excellence."

"Remarkable dedication and professionalism are what define Greenwich Hospital, and this third designation from Magnet proves just that," Greenwich Hospital President Bob Blenderman said in an announcement. "This recognition is grounded in the shared belief in our entire hospital, yet it is our nurses, guided by their leadership and innovation, who truly drive our Magnet journey forward."

Organizations seeking Magnet recognition must complete a multi-step process that includes an electronic application, written patient care documentation, an on-site visit and review by the Commission on Magnet Recognition. The designation is valid for four years.

Elsewhere in the state, Yale New Haven Hospital earned its fourth Magnet designation on Feb. 18, while Bridgeport Hospital received its first designation in December 2025.

"This represents a major milestone for our health system," Yale New Haven Health Chief Nurse Executive Ena Williams said. "It showcases the culture of excellence that defines Yale New Haven Health where we support the autonomous practice, recruitment and retention of exceptional nurses, elevate the care we deliver and drive improvements in quality and safety for the communities we proudly serve."
