In less than three weeks, the officer saved a life, apprehended mail thieves and recovered a gun off the street, police said.

GREENWICH, CT — The Greenwich Police Department this week announced the "Officer of the Month" for December.
Police officer Edwin Escobar earned the honors for his service during three separate calls in which he saved a life, apprehended mail thieves and recovered a gun off the street, the GPD said in a news release.
"P/O Escobar's diligence and dedication to service and duty exemplify the values and commitment to service that the Greenwich Police Department strives to provide to the Town of Greenwich," the GPD said in a news release.

On Dec. 7, 2023, Escobar responded to a medical call involving a person who had overdosed and was not breathing properly, police said.
Escobar administered a dose of Narcan but realized the person needed more assistance, so he delivered rescue breaths with a bag valve mask along with another dose of Narcan, according to police. The overdose was reversed, and the person was taken to the hospital where they ultimately recovered.

Less than two weeks later in the early morning hours of Dec. 19, Escobar noticed two men acting suspiciously on Greenwich Avenue, police said, who added the men were circling the area near the U.S. Postal Service mailboxes.
Escobar recognized one of the men as a suspect from a previous mail theft. The officer later located a parked car and saw a belt on the front seat with a fly trap on one end, a device commonly used to steal mail from postal boxes.
The car was later seen traveling on Greenwich Avenue, and the driver matched a description of one of the men seen earlier, police said.
A traffic stop was conducted, and a piece of paper with a sticky substance on it was seen in plain view, according to police. The man was arrested on multiple charges including possession of burglar tools, attempted larceny and possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle, police noted.
On Christmas Day, multiple GPD units were called to Greenwich Avenue on a report of a man who was acting suspiciously near a Postal Service mailbox.
The man, after seeing police officers, grabbed an object at his feet and fled on foot and ultimately got into the passenger seat of a car, police said.
The car, which was later discovered to be stolen, crashed into Escobar's marked cruiser and then into a street sign, police said. The occupants fled on foot, and Escobar gave chase and helped other officers place one of the suspects under arrest.
Located within the crashed car was a large amount of stolen mail, a handgun and high-capacity magazines, police said. The other suspect was also arrested and charged.
