Greenwich Police Department Mourns Death Of Decorated Retired Officer

The officer spent over 28 years with the Greenwich Police Department.

GREENWICH, CT — The Greenwich Police Department is mourning the death of retired officer, Robert Hansen Jr. He was 63 years old.

Hansen joined the GPD on Aug. 28, 1987, and retired on March 1, 2016, having served in the patrol division for his entire career, including three years as a public safety dispatcher, the department said in an announcement.

In 1999, Hansen was promoted as an accident car investigator, and he was a member of two "highly-selective and well sought-after" specialty teams at the GPD: the Special Response Unit and Dive Team.

Prior to working in Greenwich, Hansen, the son of retired Det. Robert Hansen Sr., served honorably in the United States Marine Corp from 1980 to 1984, the GPD said.

Throughout his career, Hansen received chief commendations for investigations and apprehensions of suspects involved in crimes ranging from burglaries to bank robberies.

In February of 2009, Hansen was recognized by the chief of police as the Officer of the Month for his dedication and work in searching for an elderly woman with depression and dementia who had wandered off.

"On that cold night, Officer Hansen located the woman shivering and suffering from hypothermia. If not for Officer Hansen’s diligence and persistence, the victim would have inevitably suffered even greater injury and potentially death," the GPD said.

Hansen's file also includes dozens of letters from grateful and appreciative residents, the GPD said.

Calling hours for Hansen will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on May 30 at Coxe and Graziano Funeral Home, located at 134 Hamilton Ave. in Greenwich.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on May 31 at St. Roch Church, 10 St Roch Ave.

"We join all members of the Department in extending our sincere sympathy to the Hansen family," the GPD said.
