Greenwich Police Investigating 'Uptick' in Home Burglaries

Four break-ins occurred this past weekend.

The Greenwich Police Department is investigating that they are describing as “a recent uptick in burglary activity,” with four burglaries reported this past weekend.

In a statement, police said they want “to raise public awareness to help protect our residents valuables and keep their homes secure.”

There were eight residential burglaries reported in May with four occurring over the past weekend, according to police. One of those break-ins happened on Knollwood Drive where thieves apparently were scared off by the burglar alarm system after they forced open a second-floor window, police said. Some silver items were reported stolen.

What has police concerned is the onset of warmer weather when people typically leave their doors and windows open, thus making them more vulnerable to thefts.

Police are advising, “If you plan to travel, enlist the help of a trusted neighbor to keep an eye on your property and a vehicle in your driveway and to collect any deliveries that may arrive in your absence. Travelers should avoid posting their travel dates on social media.”

They also advise to give property a “lived in” appearance is a deterrent as well as having a dog, or even a ‘beware of dog’ sign.

Other suggestions from police:

  • Be wary of door to door solicitors and to report any suspicious activity immediately.
  • Use alarms, video cameras, motion detection and timer lights.
  • Protect, do not flaunt your valuables, and remain aware of your surroundings.
  • Maintain an inventory of your valuable jewelry and stocks. Safety deposit boxes are the most secure options.
  • Immediately report any suspicious activity to The Greenwich Police Department.
