Greenwich Police Warn Of Mail Thefts

GREENWICH, CT — Greenwich police are warning residents about incidents of mail theft, which are occurring in both Westchester and Fairfield Counties.

"We have our Patrol Officers and Detectives working on this problem," the Greenwich Police Department said in a Facebook post. "The only people that should be removing mail from mailboxes are US Postal employees and the resident. Please keep an eye out in your neighborhood for anyone else meddling around your or your neighbor's mailbox."

Police noted that if you're mailing a payment via check and place it in your mailbox, continue to check the status of the check.

"The thieves are stealing your check, altering it, and cashing for larger sums. You are then out the loss of the money and your payment never makes it to your vendor," police said.

Other tips from the GPD:

• Collect mail as soon as possible
• Deposit outgoing mail inside your local post office
• Go paperless
• Use a mail hold while on vacation
• Require signatures for packages
• Install cameras and/or a video doorbell

If residents witness someone committing mail theft, police are asking them to take down the license plate, make/model of car and direction of travel, if possible, and contact the Greenwich Police Department immediately at 203-622-8004 or if necessary 911.
