Greenwich Republicans Hold BET Primary Tuesday

GREENWICH, CT — Greenwich public schools will be closed on Tuesday, Sept. 12, to allow for voting in the Republican Board of Estimate and Taxation primary, the Board of Education announced.

The primary was set for the 12th after incumbent Board of Estimate member Leslie Tarkington successfully garnered enough petition signatures to challenge party-endorsed candidates Andy Duus, Karen Fassuliotis, Deborah Hess, and incumbents Bill Drake, Michael Mason and Nancy Weissler. Tarkington was one of three Republican incumbents not endorsed by the party.

"Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jill Gildea made the recommendation to the Board of Education in the interest of student safety," wrote school system officials in a statement. "Staff will report to work for a professional development day on September 12.

"Students will not be required to make up the day. The original calendar planned for students to attend 181 days of school. Only 180 days are required by State statute."

The decision to close schools for the primary means students will be out of school for three days in September, Labor Day on the 4th, the 12th and Rosh Hashanah on the 21st.
