Honoring Local Veterans -- Each Greenwich Public School Plans Tributes To Honor Those Who Have Served

In honor of Veterans Day, each Greenwich Public School has planned an event or program to honor those who have served — from the greatest generation of World War II to the current conflicts where U.S. military are assigned.

On Tuesday, Nov. 11, as the nation honors veterans for their service to the country, students and staff throughout the Greenwich Public Schools will join the nation in recognizing Veterans for their contributions. Nov. 11 is the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice, which ended World War I in 1918.

Here’s a snapshot of what local students are doing to honor those who have served:

• Cos Cob School (CCS) will hold its annual Veterans Day Celebration on November 11th, hosting a Breakfast and assembly. Students will sing patriotic songs, read poems and letters, and meet with over 50 visiting
• Veterans from V.F.W. Post 10,112 Cos Cob. In conjunction with the Veterans Day program, CCS holds a New Clothing Drive and the proceeds are delivered to the Veterans Hospital in New Haven.
• Glenville School invites Veterans to speak to students and students show support by creating a flag to be displayed in the front of the building made of hands from everyone in our learning community. The Glenville School fifth-grade Community Service Council is also collecting donations for Homes for the Brave in Bridgeport.
• Hamilton Avenue School will hold a whole school assembly in recognition of Veterans Day. Grade 5 students will be reading essays and poems on what Veterans Day means to them, and sing patriotic songs. Classes will be watching a Veterans Day video, explaining what the day means and why it is celebrated. Students will be writing thank you cards to Veterans.
• International School@ Dundee will hold the school’s annual Veterans Day Ceremony on November 11th from 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
• Julian Curtiss School (JCS) will present an assembly and welcome Veterans to the school. A reservist, husband of a JCS staff member, will show a video of his time spent in the Middle East and he will speak to students about his experience.
• New Lebanon School will recognize local Byram Veterans with student tributes and the raising of the flag.
• North Mianus School (NMS) invites Veterans and service workers to attend the annual NMS assembly (9 a.m.) and then join their family members for breakfast (9:30 a.m.) in the NMS cafeteria.
• North Street School will hold a ceremony at 9 a.m. on November 11th for local veterans and NSS family veterans. The program includes color guard, and small flags lining front circle “in honor of” family veterans who cannot be present or who are deceased, followed by a Veterans Breakfast in the cafe. Student council will dress in red, white and blue and will assist with serving the breakfast. Veterans will be presented with cards that will be created by students in service club activities.
• Old Greenwich School (OGS) has planned a whole school assembly, working with a local Veterans group. They will present the colors to the school. Students will read passages about Veterans Day and the music teacher has prepared a patriotic song that will be sung as a school, with the OGS Band accompanying.
• Parkway School students and staff will meet in the front circle on Tuesday, November 11th at 9:00 a.m. for a flag raising ceremony. Parkway students in Cub Scout Pack 37 will raise the flag and lead the school in the Pledge of Allegiance. Students will be asked to write a note to an active duty service member. These notes will be sent to Operation Shoebox so they may included in gift boxes for the holidays!
• Riverside School will hold an outdoor school assembly at 9:00 a.m. on November 11th. Guests of honor, the color guard, representatives from state and local government and other invited guests will be in attendance. Parents and family members (especially military Veterans) are invited as well.
• Central Middle School Grade 8 Social Studies classes will be gathering information about the experiences of
• Veterans from oral history files archived with the Story Corps project in order to answer the question “ What
• makes a person worth remembering?” Grades 6 & 7 will be writing letters to veterans thru Operation
• Gratitude: https://www.operationgratitude.com/get-involved/write-letters/
• Eastern Middle School will read a Patriotic message during the daily Words of Wisdom announcements.
• Western Middle School teachers will be honoring Veterans Day through a variety of curriculum-based lessons, including online and classroom discussions and activities and writing thank-you letters to Veterans.
• Greenwich High School has invited Veterans to speak to classes and will include the importance of Veterans Day in the morning announcements. Social studies teachers will discuss the history and significance of the day with their students.
• Greenwich Alternative High School teachers have each incorporated conversations and/or activities into their lessons for the Day to honor Veterans. All students will be writing letters and cards to the Rocky Hill Veterans Hospital, sending 200 letters for the 200 vets.
