John Bausman III of Greenwich: Retired Associated Press Journalist

Bausman was at one time the Chief of Bureau in Moscow during the Soviet era (1968-1972) for the AP.

John Watts Baer Bausman III (Jack) of Greenwich, CT died on June 9, 2016 at the age of 92 after a brief illness. He was born in Lancaster, PA on November 10, 1923.

He was educated at Haverford School (1941) and Harvard College (1945). He served in the U.S Army during W.W. II in France and Germany. He had a long career as a journalist beginning with the Philadelphia Bulletin and the Coatesville (PA) Record. He worked for the Associated Press beginning in 1950 and covered such diverse posts as Newark and Atlantic City, New Jersey; Warsaw, Poland; Budapest, Hungary and Frankfurt, Germany He ended his foreign assignments as Chief of Bureau in Moscow during the Soviet era (1968-1972). In 1961, while working in Frankfurt, Germany, he met and married Evelyn Knierim.

He returned to the United States with his family in 1972 and continued to serve the Associated Press in various assignments including reporting from the United Nations and in the World Services Department until his retirement. Upon retirement, he was awarded a Fulbright Teaching Fellowship and spent several years teaching English and journalism in Shanghai, China. Jack faithfully served his community of Christ Church on the vestry, opening his home to refugees, as a Stephen Minister and as a member of the Community of Hope. A life long Episcopalian, he served on the Presiding Bishop’s Fund for World Relief and as a Deputy to the 1979 General Convention.

He was a member of the Retired Men’s Association of Greenwich, volunteered with the New York City Parks Mounted Patrol, served on the Greenwich Arts Council and was a board member of Friends of Autistic People in Greenwich. His many friends in the United States and abroad will remember him as a kind, generous, intelligent and thoughtful man who was fascinated by the many people he encountered throughout his life. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn and three children, Mary-Fred Bausman-Watkins with her husband, Peter, of Saint Paul, MN; Charles Bausman with his wife, Kristina, and daughter-in-law Olga Bausman of Moscow, Russia and John Bausman with his wife, Anita, of Riverside, CT, along with nine grandchildren.

He is predeceased by his daughter Jane Bausman and his sister Mary Jane Kenworthy. A funeral service will be held at Christ Church Greenwich on Friday, June 24 at 11:00 am.
