The Junior League of Greenwich (JLG) is thrilled to announce Zara Haque, an 11th grade student at Greenwich High School, as the recipient of its Community Service Award. This award recognizes her outstanding contributions to the community, particularly her work with the Greenwich Middle School STEM Fair and the STEM to Stern (STS) program.

Every year since 1996, the Junior League of Greenwich presents a Community Service Award to a local teen girl. The award recognizes an outstanding local high school student who exemplifies the Junior League’s mission and whose volunteer activities show a significant and sustained commitment to community service and leadership.

Zara's remarkable commitment to STEM education is evident in her work as the STEM Coordinator for the Greenwich chapter of STEM to Stern (STS), a national organization dedicated to providing access to rowing and STEM education to underprivileged students. She developed and instructed five semesters of science research curriculum for middle school students recruited from the Boys & Girls Club.

In addition to her work with STS, Zara's leadership in organizing the Greenwich Middle School STEM Fair has been a significant factor in her receiving this award. As a delegate on the Greenwich First Selectman’s Youth Commission (FSYC), Zara played a pivotal role in bringing the STEM Fair back to an in-person format after the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Greenwich Middle School STEM Fair provides middle school students with a platform to present their research and an opportunity to connect with like-minded peers from across Greenwich’s middle schools.

Expressing her gratitude, Zara stated, "I'm sincerely grateful to the Junior League for the $2000 associated with this community service award, which I plan to use in two ways. First, to fund students' research supplies for their Greenwich Middle School STEM Fair projects in order to offset the financial burden often associated with pursuing science research, and second, to fund annual visits by Yale Open Labs (a Yale STEM outreach group) to STEM to Stern, in order to expose STEM to Stern students, likely for the first time, to the vast and varied array of STEM fields that they can pursue in life."

Zara has been engaged with science research since eighth grade, and her passion has led her to present her work at the Connecticut Science & Engineering Fair, where she has received several accolades, including 1st place in Life Sciences and 1st place in Future Sustainability. Her exemplary service and dedication to using her love of science to help others make her a deserving recipient of this award.

The Junior League of Greenwich congratulates Zara Haque on her exceptional achievements and her inspiring commitment to community service. We are proud to support her continued efforts to make a positive impact through STEM education.
