Connecticut's 2017 Labor Day Weekend Crime and Traffic Stats Released

Police update how many DUI arrests, traffic violations and accidents have been reported thus far. Extra patrols still planned.

Thousands of citation have been handed out by Connecticut State Police this Labor Day weekend. According to State Police, 765 speeding tickets have been disseminated, 31 seat belt violations, 1,812 moving violations, which includes texting, unsafe lane changes, and following too closely, and 36 DUI arrests.

A total of 326 accidents have been reported including 53 with injuries and one fatality. The above numbers include Friday, Sept. 1 through Labor Day morning. Connecticut State Police have added numerous extra roving patrols and DUI checkpoints throughout the state.

By way of comparison, during the 2016 Labor Day weekend, Connecticut State Police issued 1,699 tickets for speeding, 165 for seatbelt violations, 3,552 tickets for moving violations and made 51 arrests for driving under the influence. State Police investigated 283 motor vehicle crashes, 43 with injury, and 0 fatal motor vehicle accidents.

Connecticut State Troopers are concentrating their enforcement efforts on drunk driving, speeding, seatbelt violations, and distracted driving during the entire Labor Day Weekend beginning September 1 through September 5. (See below for where the extra police patrols will be held on Labor Day.)

“These dangerous driving behaviors claim the lives of our residents every year. Troopers will utilize both traditional and nontraditional state police vehicles on the roads searching for reckless and intoxicated drivers. Troopers will man sobriety checkpoints, increase roving patrols and utilize the State Police Breath Alcohol Testing Mobile Unit,” Connecticut State Police said in a news release.

Connecticut State Troopers also want to remind motorists to expect heavy traffic, exercise caution, allow extra time to reach their destination, don’t text and drive, set GPS destinations prior to traveling, and use a hands-free device when talking on your cellphone/mobile device while operating a vehicle.
