Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Fones, 83; Long-Time Old Greenwich Resident, Real Estate Broker, Rummage Room Volunteer

On June 2, Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Fones died peacefully at her home in Old Greenwich at the age of 83 after a long illness.

She will be incredibly missed and remembered kindly by those whose lives she touched and the people who loved her. Specifically, by her daughter Mary Lee and husband Andy Weber of Branford; son John and wife Jeanne Fones of Easton and daughter Nancy and husband Steve Dearing of Old Greenwich. And eight grandchildren.

Betty was born on August 1, 1931 in Baltimore, Maryland to Mary and John Francis Steadman. She graduated from Seton High and in 1955 married Maynard L. Fones of Tacoma Park, MD. They were married for 42 years until he passed away in 1997.

She is preceded in death by her husband Maynard Fones, son Larry Fones of Nantucket, and brothers John F. Steadman Jr of Stevensville, MD and Thomas F. Steadman of Ellicott City, MD.

A long-time resident of Old Greenwich and Nantucket and active in both communities. She enjoyed trips to Broadway with the Women’s Club and attended daily mass at St. Clement Church. She had been a real estate broker in Greenwich for over 30 years. In recent years, she enjoyed dedicating her time at the Rummage Room in OG and walking around her beloved Greenwich Point.
One of Betty’s favorite places had been her home in Nantucket where her family spent the summers.

A memorial mass is scheduled for Friday, June 12th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Clement Church in Stamford. A private graveside ceremony will be scheduled on Nantucket later this summer.
