Minor Fire at Peter Brant's White Birch Farms Estate

Bucket of cleaners and rags ignites; newsprint magnate's staff extinguish fire.

A bucket containing cleaning solution and rags caught fire in a bathroom of the mansion owned by newsprint magnate Peter Brant.

The fire which was extinguished by employees at Brant's backcountry White Birch Farms estate, before Greenwich firefighters arrived shortly before 4 p.m. Dec. 27, according to Greenwich Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Zack. The bucket was in a third-floor bathroom.

As firefighters drove to the scene, fire radio dispatches included reports there was smoke in the house — a 21-room Colonial situated on more than 50 acres of property that fronts both North Street and Taconic Road. Fire crews stayed on the scene for less than 15 minutes. No injuries were reported.

It was unclear whether the polo-playing, art-collecting Brant and his supermodel wife Stephanie Seymour were home at the time of the fire. A request seeking comment was e-mailed Wednesday evening.

The couple made headlines a year ago when they reconciled after nasty divorce proceedings. And last spring Brant hosted a glittering opening of a solo art show featuring up-and-coming artist Josh Smith at the Brant Foundation Art Study Center on the grounds of Brant's , which drew the likes of Christopher Walken, Naomi Campbell, Julian Schnabel and Jeff Koons.
