CT Weather: Strong to Severe Thunderstorms Possible Tuesday

Updated weather advisories have been released in advance of Tuesday's severe weather chance. Here are the latest details.

There is a chance for strong to severe thunderstorms in Connecticut Tuesday afternoon and evening and the National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for the entire state.

The National Weather Service says "The big weather story will be for Tuesday afternoon and evening as a cold front crosses the area. With this front, there is a possibility of strong to severe thunderstorms. High temperatures will reach the upper 70s to mid 80s."

"As the front stalls to the south, there could be additional spotty showers lingering into Wednesday with temperatures bouncing back into the 60s to near 70," the weather service says.

Each area of the state has received its own updated advisory from the National Weather Service:

Fairfield County and inland sections of New Haven County: There is the possibility of severe thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon and evening, with the main threat damaging wind gusts and large hail. In addition, locally heavy rainfall is possible with any stronger convection. While the main threat is for minor flooding of urban and poor drainage areas, there is a small chance for localized flash flooding.

New Haven County coast, Middlesex and New London counties: There is a very low chance for isolated severe thunderstorms Tuesday afternoon and evening, with the main threat damaging wind gusts. In addition, locally heavy rainfall is possible with any stronger convection. While the main threat is for minor flooding of urban and poor drainage areas, there is a small chance for localized flash flooding.


Hartford, Tolland and Windham counties: Scattered severe thunderstorms are possible Tuesday afternoon and evening...roughly between 2 and 9 pm. The area of greatest concern is across western and central Massachusetts into northern Connecticut...but can not be ruled out across the rest of the region.

The primary threat with any severe thunderstorms will be damaging straight line wind gusts. However...isolated large hail along with heavy rain/street flooding is also a concern. Lastly...there is a low
risk of an isolated tornado across western/central MA and northern Connecticut.


Litchfield County: There is a slight chance of thunderstorms late tonight. Thunderstorms are not expected to be severe. There is a chance of thunderstorms on Tuesday. Some of these storms may be severe mainly between the hours of noon and 7 pm. The main threats will be damaging wind and large hail. An isolated tornado is also possible.

Tuesday: Showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 4pm. Patchy fog before 8am. High near 79. South wind 7 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Tuesday Night: Showers and thunderstorms before 1am, then a chance of showers. Low around 59. North wind 6 to 11 mph becoming light and variable in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Wednesday: A 30 percent chance of showers, mainly before noon. Cloudy, with a high near 63. Northeast wind 7 to 10 mph.

Wednesday Night: A 20 percent chance of showers before midnight. Cloudy, with a low around 52. Northeast wind 5 to 7 mph.

Thursday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 75.

Thursday Night: A 30 percent chance of rain after midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 59.

Friday: Rain likely, mainly after noon. Cloudy, with a high near 61. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Friday Night: Rain likely. Cloudy, with a low around 55. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Tuesday: Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after 4pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Patchy fog before 9am. Otherwise, mostly sunny, then becoming cloudy during the afternoon, with a high near 84. South wind 5 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Tuesday Night: Showers and thunderstorms likely before 8pm, then a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 57. North wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Wednesday: A chance of showers, mainly before 10am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 67. Northeast wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Wednesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 53. Southeast wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening.

Thursday: Partly sunny, with a high near 81.

Thursday Night: A chance of showers after 3am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 57. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Friday: Showers likely, mainly after 9am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 65. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Friday Night: Showers likely. Cloudy, with a low around 54. Chance of precipitation is 70%.
