CT Weather: 115K Power Outages as Heavy Snow Falls Now

The heaviest of the snow is moving into the state now and thundersnow is being reported in some towns. Here is how much more snow to expect.

Because the snow started later than previously thought, it will be interesting to see how many schools will delay or cancel on Thursday. Many people were likely perplexed by the lack of snow Wednesday morning but it has arrived and it will fall fast and furiously this evening before ending after midnight. Some thundersnow is also expected too.

The tractor-trailer ban has been lifted by Gov. Dannel Malloy for all highways except I-84.

The strongest bands of snow ended by 10 p.m. through much of the state.. Bradley International Airport remains open, but about 55 percent of flights are cancelled. The cancelations are expected to back up into Thursday.

There are about 115,000 Eversource customers without power as of 10 p.m., mainly in Fairfield County. About 3,000 United Illuminating customers are without power as well.

The National Weather Service in an afternoon update details what is left from this powerful nor’easter, and the answer is plenty. For the coast of Fairfield and New Haven counties, 6 to 11 inches of snow is expected and snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are likely.

For inland areas of Fairfield and New Haven counties, 10 to 16 inches of snow is expected with snowfall rates approaching 3 inches per hour at times.

Inland sections of New London and Middlesex counties will end up with 5 to 9 inches of snow and snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour. On the coast of New London and Middlesex counties, 2 to 6 inches of snow is expected.

In Hartford, Tolland and Windham counties, 8 to 15 inches of snow is predicted with the highest amounts in northern Connecticut. Snowfall rates of up to three inches an hour is possible. And in Litchfield County, 8 to 15 inches of snow is expected here.

Tonight: Snow, mainly before 1am. The snow could be heavy at times. Low around 32. Wind chill values between 20 and 25. Breezy, with a north wind 20 to 25 mph decreasing to 13 to 18 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 37 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 3 to 7 inches possible.


Inland areas of Fairfield and New Haven counties:

This Afternoon: Snow. The snow could be heavy at times. High near 34. Wind chill values between 20 and 25. North wind around 16 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 9 to 13 inches possible.

Tonight: Snow, mainly before 1am. The snow could be heavy at times. Low around 30. Wind chill values between 20 and 25. North wind 8 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 4 to 8 inches possible.


Inland areas of Middlesex and New London counties:

Snow. The snow could be heavy at times. Steady temperature around 33. Wind chill values between 20 and 25. North wind around 16 mph, with gusts as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 3 to 7 inches possible.

Tonight: Snow, mainly before 2am. The snow could be heavy at times. Low around 32. Wind chill values between 20 and 25. North wind 11 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New snow accumulation of 6 to 10 inches possible.

Coastal areas of New London and Middlesex counties:

Thursday: A chance of snow, possibly mixing with rain after 9am, then gradually ending. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 42. Northwest wind 7 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.


Tolland County:

The state has 634 Department of Transportation plows on hand along with 200 contractor plows to deal with the storm.
