Nicholas Roberto, 90; Former Greenwich Golf Pro; World War II Veteran

Nicholas Roberto, a former head golf pro at the Griffith Harris Golf Clulb, passed away peacefully at his Cape Coral, FL home on Aug. 16, 2014. He was 90.

Nick was born in Greenwich, son of Rocco and Incornato (Pennella) Roberto.

He served his country with the U.S. Army Air Corp in the Battle of the Bulge. Prior to moving to Cape Coral in 1995, Nick was a PGA Professional in Connecticut, employed by Round Hill Country Club as an assistant professional for 19 years and Bruce Golf Course (now the Griffith Harris Golf Club) as head golf pro for 25 years. He was a member of The Professional Golfers’ Association of America for over 60 years. Teaching and playing the sport of golf was his passion and he instructed many athletes and celebrities.

In retirement, he continued instructing young newcomers to the game by volunteering with the free junior golf clinic at Coral Oaks Golf Course. He was past president of the Connecticut Club, member of the Cape Coral Civic Association, Glenville Seniors, 9th District Vets and Retired Men’s Association of Greenwich.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years Elizabeth C. (Capalbo) Roberto; two sons, Nicholas (Nancy) and Steven (Loni); grandson Michael (Ashley); and sister Rose Morello (Anthony).

He was preceded in death by his brother Thomas.

Services were scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 21 at Coral Ridge Funeral Home, 1630 SW Pine Island Rd., Cape Coral. Entombment will follow the services at Coral Ridge Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Hope Hospice or Gulf Coast Humane Society.
