After six years at the helm of North Street School, Smith takes assignment as Wilton Public Schools Assistant Superintendent, effective July 1st

North Street School Principal, Dr. Charles Smith has accepted the position of Assistant Superintendent at  Wilton Public Schools, according to press release issued on Thursday from Greenwich Board of Education communication director Kim Eves.

After six years as principal at North Street School (NSS) Charles "Chuck" Smith will assume the role of Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction in the Wilton school district effective July 1, 2013.

Smith has been with the Greenwich Public School District since 1997, serving as a founding member of the District Data Team, the Teacher Evaluation Professional Learning (TEPL) Committee, and most recently serving as Lead Principal, a role in which he mentored fellow principals.

Smith was quoted in the BOE release as saying, “ It has been a tremendous honor to work for the Greenwich Public Schools for the past sixteen years. Although I am looking forward to the challenges of a new position in a new school system, I will miss the support and friendship of my colleagues here in Greenwich.”

The release quoted Greenwich Schools Superintendent McKersie as saying, “Dr. Smith’s acceptance of the Wilton position is certainly a loss for our District, especially for the students. It is, however, a great opportunity for Dr. Smith and the Wilton staff and students will benefit from his excellent leadership."

According to the BOE news release, a search for a North Street School Principal will begin immediately and wil include input from NSS staff, parents and District administrators, though the Superintendent will select and appoint the candidate.

An educator for 32 years, Dr. Smith began his career in 1981 as a Special Education Teacher at Intermediate School 195, Roberto Clemente School for the Arts in New York City.  In 1983 he joined the staff at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York. Among his accolades, Dr. Smith received the Greenwich PTA’s Special Education Services Award in 2002.
