Police Cruiser Hit As Christmas Mailbox Theft Thwarted In Greenwich
Two men were caught trying to break into a mailbox in Greenwich on Christmas night, police said.

GREENWICH, CT — Two New York City men are facing several criminal charges after being caught trying to break into a mailbox off of Greenwich Avenue on Christmas night.
According to an arrest report, at 11:52 p.m., Greenwich police intercepted a man they described as "skinny" and wearing a black hoodie and black face covering trying to break into the mailbox at the corner of Greenwich Avenue and Fawcett Place. Nearby was a dark-colored Porsche sport utility vehicle, police said.
As police drew near, two men jumped into the Porsche and tried to get away by driving on a sidewalk — and the wrong way up the Avenue — but slammed into a police car, according to an arrest report. The were chased down after after abandoning the vehicle and trying to run away, according to an arrest report.

Police located in the vehicle tools used to steal mail, multiple pieces of mail, a handgun, and two accompanying large-capacity magazines, along with assorted 9MM ammunition, according to a police report. The Porsche was determined to have been stolen out of Suffolk County, NY.
The driver, identified as 19-year-old Jose Armando Lopez-Romero of Brooklyn, was charged with:

- Improper use of a plate
- Evading responsibility
- A lane violation
- Driving the wring way on a one-way street (two counts)
- Driving without a license
- Illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle
- Possession of burglar tools
- Larceny of a motor vehicle
- Conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny
- Sixth-degree larceny
- Interfering with police
He failed to post a $51,000 bond and is due in Stamford Superior Court on Jan. 8, according to police records.
The passenger, identified as 20-year-old Luis Samael Martinez Escoto of The Bronx, was charged with:
- Possession of burglar tools
- Conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny
- Sixth-degree larceny
- Interfering with police
He also failed to post a $51,000 bond and is due in Stamford Superior Court on Jan. 8, according to police records.
