Sacred Heart Greenwich Gains Support From CT Bishop: Report

Bishop Frank Caggiano has come out in support of the school, which is threatening to expel a student over a Planned Parenthood sticker.

GREENWICH, CT — Sacred Heart Greenwich, the all-girls Catholic high school threatening to expel a student over a pro-choice laptop sticker, has received support for its decision from Bishop Frank Caggiano of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bridgeport, writes the Greenwich Time. Sophomore Kate Murray this week was told by the school to remove a "I Stand with Planned Parenthood" sticker from her laptop or face expulsion.

In a statement to the publication, Bishop Caggiano said that the Catholic Church is known to oppose abortion, which is in keeping with its teachings, and as such he supports the decision by SHG's Head of School Pamela Hayes.

The private school is not one of those under the diocese, but Bishop Caggiano reportedly spoke with Hayes prior to her decision. Patch reached out to a spokesperson for the diocese for a statement but did not hear back from them.

Murray was given the choice to leave school now or at the end of the year if she keeps the sticker. She has removed it for the time being, but her parents say that she hasn't decided whether she will remain at the school. Her sister, Alex, is a 2012 graduate of the school.
