Schedules To Change, Start Time To Remain At Greenwich HS: Report

Schools Superintendent Dr. Jill Gildea Thursday night introduced a new scheduling concept to help address issues with the later state time.

GREENWICH, CT — Greenwich High School will adopt a reconfigured school schedule next year that shortens the instructional and other blocks during the day to create an end-of-day "opportunity block" to help address issues with school start and end times, writes Greenwich Free Press.

The start time was pushed back an hour to 8:30 a.m. at the school this past fall, a move that was met with both praise and criticism. While it allowed students to gain an extra hour of much-needed sleep, it also exacerbated traffic issues and pushed back sports practices and games and other after-school activities.

Dr. Jill Gildea, district officials, parents, students, other town department heads and residents reviewed the effects of the time change during the year. Gildea and officials decided on the opportunity block concept to help address as many concerns as possible, she said during a Thursday night presentation before the Board of Education.
