Sinking Boat Rescued On Long Island Sound: Greenwich Police

Police said the rescue occurred on Aug. 19.

GREENWICH, CT — Greenwich police rescued a sinking boat in Long Island Sound over the weekend, the department said on Facebook.

On Aug. 19, the Greenwich Police Marine Section 139 responded to a boat that was sinking near Great Captain Island. Officers were able to secure and tow the vessel to a marina while simultaneously pumping water out, police said.

No injuries were reported. Police did not say what caused the boat to take on water.

The GPD Marine Section operates year-round, and is on patrol for 16 hours each day during boating season. The fleet consists of three vessels each with different capabilities that allow officers to respond to different scenarios.

The police boat used in this particular rescue is a 39-foot aluminum hulled jet driven vessel, which was placed into service in May 2013. The boat is equipped with state-of-the -art navigational equipment, side-scan sonar, infrared capabilities, radar, a 1,000 pound lift crane and firefighting capabilities.

Police used the incident to remind boaters about safety.

"This is a good time for all boaters to review and check their safety devices and pre-operation boat checks," the GPD said.
