Smoked Salmon Distributed in CT Recalled for Possible Listeria Contamination

Two types of smoked salmon have been recalled because they could be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The product was distributed in New York and Connecticut by the Mt. Kisco Smokehouse to retail stores and restaurants between September 6, 2016, and September 16, 2016, according to information from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Routine testing by an FDA inspector revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in floor drains and cracks in the floor of the company which led to the voluntary recall.

Production of the product has been suspended while the company and the FDA investigate the source of the problem.

The whole product is packaged in an unlabeled paper box and is delivered to restaurants.

The sliced product is sold in a clear plastic package labeled on the back with the lot number and “use by” date.

Listeria, the FDA said, can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems.

Healthy individuals may only suffer short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.

Listeria can cause miscarriages and still births in pregnant women.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the recalled product.

Anyone who has purchased the affected items should return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
