LEARN Announces Director for Marine Science Magnet High School of Southeastern Connecticut

LEARN announces Nicholas Spera will join the organization as Director of the Marine Science Magnet High School of Southeastern Connecticut effective July 1, 2011.

Dr. Nicholas Spera has been in the education field since 2000 when he received his Bachelor of Science degree from Siena College in Loudonville, NY.  His experience as mathematics teacher, dean of students, and assistant principal will bring a wide range of knowledge and expertise to the region.  Currently, Nicholas is employed at Guilford High School as Dean of Students, after completion of his Doctorate in the field of Leadership in Elementary/Secondary Education in July 2009 from Johnson and Wales University in Providence, RI. 

Nicholas joins MSMHS with an educational philosophy based upon the importance of motivating all students to succeed to their highest abilities while providing each student with an engaging, diverse and rigorous academic learning environment that promotes and prepares each student for productive roles incorporating critical 21st century life skills.  Spera stated, “Words cannot express the excitement that I have about the opportunity to lead MSMHS. I am confident that with the education, leadership experience, and knowledge that I have possessed over the years, that I will help make the Marine Science Magnet High School a great place to learn, grow, and work.”

Operated by LEARN as an on-going partnership among educators, industry and other community agencies, MSMHS provides a core curriculum and related activities which focus on marine subjects and are reflective of current and future marine-related opportunities. MSMHS is uniquely designed to equip students with both practical skills and theoretical knowledge because it combines a number of powerful attributes in the fulfillment of its mission: salt water and fresh water access, a marine studies immersion component, field work and internship experiences, a powerful academic sciences component, and access to both career-bound and college-bound preparation.
