EB Workers Furloughed While One Sub Contract Wraps, Next Begins

Some 300 Electric Boat trades workers, half from Connecticut, can collect unemployment, keep benefits while on furlough, a report says.

GROTON, CT — Around 150 Electric Boat trades workers are being furloughed as the shipbuilder is in transition between Navy submarine contracts, according to a report in The Day.

In December of 2019, the Navy announced it was awarding its largest-ever shipbuilding contract to General Dynamics Electric Boat for construction of nine Virginia-class attack submarines.

The contract is for the Block V Virginias, worth $22.2 billion. At the time, Electric Boat President Kevin Graney said the contract means stability for the shipyard.

Slated for nine boats of an original 11, it may be further reduced to eight based on Pres. Donald Trump's 2021 budget.

The Day reported an EB spokesperson describe the furloughs as part of "workforce fluctuations" at EB's Groton and Quonset Point, R.I., shipyards as work on its current contract for attack subs wraps and preparations begin to be made for the next.
