Groton Police Sergeant Mark Tourville Retiring

Sergeant Tourville was raised in Pawcatuck, Connecticut and attended Stonington High School, where he graduated in 1983.

We are sad to announce that as of August 1, 2015 Sergeant Mark Tourville will be retiring from the Groton City Police Department.

Before Sergeant Tourville was hired by GCPD, he was enlisted in the United States Army, where he completed basic training, Advance Infantry Training, Airborne School, Ranger School and Sniper Training. He was with the 2/75th Rangers in Fort Lewis, Washington before receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1996. Sergeant Tourville continued his active duty with the United States Army by serving in the National Guard from 1988-1990. During that time, he attended Special Forces school and received an Honorable Discharge as a Staff Sergeant.

During Sergeant Tourville’s service in the military he received several awards such as: U.S. Army Service Ribbon, U.S. Army Parachute Badge, U.S. Army Expert Infantry Badge, U.S. Army Achievement Medal, U.S. Army Ranger tab, U.S. Army Special Forces tab and Belgium Parachute Badge.

Sergeant Tourville was hired by GCPD in May 1990. During his 25 year career with GCPD, he was a senior Firearms Instructor, Taser Instructor, and specialized in Accident Reconstruction. Sergeant Tourville was also the Captain on the Police boat, bike officer and a Field Training Officer. He also was on the Dive Team progressing to the Dive Team Leader/Commander, where he was qualified in Rapid Deployment Search and Rescue/Recovery and Subsurface Technical Anti-Terrorist Diver.

During Sergeant Tourville’s career with GCPD he received several awards such as: various Chief’s Awards, Meritorious Service Medal and a Unit Citation. He said two of his personal highlights in his career include assisting in rescuing a giant leatherback sea turtle and delivering two babies, one by himself.

Sergeant Tourville will be retiring as the second shift supervisor, where he prides his supervisor style as “being honest and straight to the point”. He is retiring and moving to sunny Florida with his wife, Janet, of 22 years and their son, Mark. He will be enjoying retirement and taking part in his favorite activities like, fishing, hunting, racing and going to the beach.
