Groton Schools Seek Teachers, Staff To Fill Open Roles (patch.com) — Families and job seekers in Groton still have time to connect with local schools as they work to fill a range of open positions before classes begin. The district is hiring for roles from high school teaching and special education support to food services, clerical work, and multiple substitute and support staff jobs. Many of these openings are seasonal or vacancy replacements rather than newly budgeted positions.

Police logs — Sept. 1, 2026 (theday.com) — Groton City residents can see two recent arrests listed in the latest regional police log, including charges for first-degree failure to appear and disorderly conduct with weapons-related counts. The report also includes DUI and other charges in nearby East Lyme, Putnam and Stonington, and reminds readers that arrests are not convictions.
   

3. Haubold takes command of USS Iowa (mississippivalleypublishing.com) — A new commanding officer has taken charge of the USS Iowa during a change-of-command ceremony held aboard the Historic Ship Nautilus at the Submarine Force Museum in Groton. Navy leaders praised outgoing Cmdr. Gregory Coy's mentorship and readiness focus as Cmdr. Kyle Haubold steps in to lead the Virginia-class attack submarine's more than 130‑member crew.
   

4. Taking the Light Out From Under the Bushel Basket (norwichdiocese.org) — Catholic parishes including St. Mary, Mother of the Redeemer and Sacred Heart in Groton are expanding an evangelization series aimed at welcoming both parishioners and neighbors with talks, music, and community gatherings. The program draws on local deacons and experts to address real-life questions, from bereavement to everyday faith, and invites residents from across the region to "come and see" what the parish community offers.
   

5. New Haven's 19K students return to classrooms for first day of school: 'We're so excited' (ctpost.com) — Groton students are among those across Connecticut starting the 2026-27 school year this week, alongside New Haven, Farmington and Hamden. While New Haven's first day festivities take center stage, Groton families will also see statewide changes like free school breakfast and potential new rules on cellphones and classroom screen time.
