Iconic Groton Pharmacy Closing After Nearly 60 Years: Report

The pharmacy had been family owned and operated in Groton since the 1960's.

GROTON, CT — After nearly 60 years serving the local community, one of the last independent pharmacies to survive in the region is set to close this week. According to media reports, Fort Hill Pharmacy in Groton will be closing for good Wednesday, Sept. 26.

According to their website, the pharmacy has been family owned and operated since 1960, having been in business in Groton for 58 years. Fort Hill Pharmacy offers unique services such as free delivery, quick service, medication synchronization and specialty packaging.

Customers of the locally-owned pharmacy are now being sent to a nearby CVS, according the New London Day. The national chain promises to continue offering customers home delivery and blister pack service.

The pharmacy was run for many years by the Messina family before selling the business three years ago, according to the New London Day.

According to NBC Connecticut, Pharmacy Manager and co-owner Phani Daggubati cited declining reimbursements from insurance companies and new Direct and Indirect Remuneration (DIR) fees as reasons for having to close the iconic spot.

Several pharmacy staff will be working at the CVS, offering longtime customers the opportunity to still see some familiar phases when picking up their prescriptions, NBC Connecticut reported.
