John Scott Looks to Take Back 40th District Seat

John Scott has officially launched his campaign for State Representative in the 40th District, which covers Groton and Ledyard.

GROTON, CT — Former State Representative John Scott officially launched his campaign last week for State Representative in the 40th District, which covers Groton and Ledyard.

“It would be a great honor to return to Hartford to serve the residents of Groton and Ledyard,” Scott said in a release. “Our state continues to head in the wrong direction and the only way we change this is by sending people to Hartford that will end the years of tax and spend policies. I am ready to return to Hartford and will fight for the hardworking taxpayers of Groton and Ledyard.”

In 2014, Scott upset longtime State Representative Edward Moukawsher, becoming the first openly gay Republican to serve in the General Assembly. John proudly served the 40th General Assembly district from 2014 to 2016.

During his term serving the 40th district, John fought hard against Governor Dan Malloy’s and legislative Democrats’ tax increases and anti-business proposals.

“I was proud of the work I accomplished during my first term in office,” Scott said. “It has been frustrating watching our governor and majority party propose tax increase after tax increase as a plan to solve our fiscal crisis. Our revenue stream is not the problem; it’s the overspending and the over taxation that is leading to perpetual budget deficits.

“Working with my Republican colleagues we came up with a concrete plan to turn the state around that didn’t require tax increases, tolls, or less money for our local schools. It was unfortunate that our proposals were ignored by the majority party and the governor, who are now pushing for more taxes.”

The House Republican caucus will be looking to pick up more than four seats in November to gain the majority. In September, House and Senate Republicans, who are in the minority, passed a no tax increase budget with bipartisan support, but it was vetoed by the governor.

“House and Senate Republicans have proven they are ready to lead and ready to turn the state around,” Scott said. “Winning the majority this November will mean that we can end the forty years of one-party rule that has led us to where we are today. I am asking for residents of Groton and Ledyard for their support and to send me back to Hartford to be part of a change that will result in a better Connecticut for all.”
