Native American Basket Weaving Demonstration Taking Place In Groton
The nonprofit Avery Memorial Association will be holding a basket weaving demonstration at the Ebenezer Avery House this weekend.

GROTON, CT - The nonprofit Avery Memorial Association will be holding a basket weaving demonstration at the Ebenezer Avery House this weekend. The event will take place June 3 from noon to 4 p.m., according to a release.
Leading the demonstration will be Sharon Maynard, a Native American basket weaver. Maynard weaves traditional splint baskets that are made by the tribes of Southern New England. (To sign up for Groton breaking news alerts and more, click here.)
She is a Mohegan tribal member who has learned basketry from the elders of her tribe. Along with demonstrating her craft, she will be answering questions about the art of basketry.

Guided tours of the house will be offered during normal operating hours, from noon to 4 p.m. The museum is open to the public from Memorial Day through Labor Day on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m., or by appointment by calling 860-446-9257 or emailing sglantiere@aol.com.
Founded in 1895, the Avery Memorial Association documents the history of the Groton Avery Clan, preserves all family records and artifacts for future descendants and educates the public about the historical significance of the Avery family.

The AMA operates the Ebenezer Avery House, built by Parke Avery circa 1750 and located at Fort Griswold State Park. After the Battle of Groton Heights on September 6, 1781, the house was used as a makeshift hospital for wounded American soldiers.
