E.C Adams Middle School Tree Removal Update
Town officials said the trees needed to be removed due to safety concerns.

Guilford, CT - Five trees in front of the E.C. Adams Middle School were removed on Friday July 8 by the Guilford School System due to public safety concerns, town officials announced.
On May 9, 2016 Kevin Magee, Environmental Planner/Tree Warden, meet with Cliff Gurnham, Facilities Manager for the Guilford School System to look at condition of the trees in front of the E.C Adams Middle School due to several of the trees not fully leafing out, officials said in a statement.
The inspection revealed that the trees had interior decay that was more prevalent in the upper canopy and a lot of large diameter dead branches in the canopy.

Several of the trees contained large dead branches caught up on other branches. Since the upper canopy had more decayed and dead wood than healthy branches, trimming of these trees would have left the trees with very little canopy that would be unsightly.
Following the tree warden’s inspection a public notice was attached to the trees indicating their planned removal along with the 10 day appeal process. No request for a public hearing was submitted regarding the removal of the trees.

The tree warden is working with the Guilford Garden Club and the Guilford School System to have trees replanted in front of the building. Currently the Guilford Garden club has donations for two trees to be planted in front of the school. The trees are scheduled to be planted in September.
