Moratorium Considered in Guilford

The proposal has led to mixed reaction among residents and business leaders in town.

Guilford’s Planning and Zoning Commission is considering a six-month moratorium which would impact the town’s marina, the business area of lower Whitfield Street, the Guilford Mooring Restaurant, and Oceanco’s property or the former Stone House Restaurant site.

A meeting was held this week and several residents say the moratorium is needed to preserve the charm of the area, especially ensuring taller buildings aren’t constructed, the New Haven Register reports.

But business leaders question the motive behind the moratorium, which would allow officials time to study the best use of land there and which developments are most appropriate.

Some have speculated that Oceanco plans to change the look of the Stone House Restaurant for its office space, but representatives have disputed that claim. Others speculate that town officials and residents are worried that Oceanco owners will acquire more land there for office space, which residents vehemently opposed.

Another hearing is scheduled for March 2.
