Top State Official Coming to Guilford High School to 'End the R-Word'

This is the fifth year Guilford students have participated in the campaign.

GUILFORD, CT - State Comptroller Kevin Lembo will stop by Guilford High School early Tuesday to “End the R-Word” – a nationwide pledge to eliminate the derogatory use of the word, “retard(ed)," Lembo's office announced in a prepared statement.

Guilford’s schools are participating in the campaign for the fifth year in a row. Pledges will be collected on the main floor in the Commons at Guilford High School from 6:50 a.m. to 7:20 a.m. each day and during lunch waves. Events and pledge signings are also planned at Adams and Baldwin Middle Schools during the week.

“Words are powerful – both as weapons and inspiration,” Lembo said in a prepared statement. “I’m proud to sign this pledge – and proud that the Guilford community, where I live, is helping to lead the way on this important initiative.”

The pledge reads: I pledge and support the elimination of the derogatory use of the word “retard(ed)” from everyday speech and promote the acceptance and inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities.
