$250K In State Funds To Be Used For Sidewalk Repairs In Hamden

HAMDEN, CT — The Hamden Legislative Council recently authorized the town to apply for, accept, and expend up to $250,000 in Local Capital Improvement Program (LoCIP) funding to be used for removing and replacing sidewalks, curbs, and aprons across Hamden, according to Mayor Curt Balzano Leng.

The sidewalk repair and replacement program will prioritize and focus on locations across Hamden with damages caused by tree roots, frost heaves, settlement, corrosion, vehicle damages, and also by the age of the oldest uncompleted registered sidewalk issues, according to a press release.

Due the volume of sites on the list of locations to be repaired, the town will “utilize these funds only for outstanding claims and the oldest issue locations,” the press release states. “The work will be performed by one of three of the Town’s ‘On-Call’ construction contractors who were selected through a public procurement process.”

“Fixing up our streets and sidewalks is a major priority, and an effort in which we’ve had much success over the past few years,” Leng said. “Since 2015 we’ve repaired about 4 linear miles of sidewalks across Hamden, downsizing our repair and claims list considerably. These repairs add true value to our neighborhoods and show residents that we care about our infrastructure.

“Using this grant program allows us to make these major investments while also lowering what Hamden borrows, reducing our capital debts. We’ve been able to do this because of consistent focus on this important need, and due to the exemplary work of our Hamden Engineering Department.”
