Car Thief Arrested After Foot Chase In Hamden: Police

Police say the 17-year-old suspect ditched a stolen car during a pursuit early Wednesday morning. Two other vehicles got away.

HAMDEN, CT — Hamden Police arrested a suspected car thief after a 17-year-old New Haven resident ditched a stolen car he was driving and was apprehended following a foot chase during the overnight hours on Wednesday. It all began at about 1:30 a.m. on March 28 when Cheshire Police advised Hamden Police that a recently stolen motor vehicle was last seen entering Hamden, according to Capt. Ronald Smith. Cheshire Police also said that there were two other vehicles driving along with the stolen vehicle.

Moments later, Officer Joseph Venditto saw the three vehicles traveling on Shepard Avenue at a high rate of speed, according to Smith. Police attempted to stop the vehicles in the area of Dixwell Avenue and Skiff Street but they all fled in different directions.

One of the vehicles stopped on Goodrich Street and the driver, a 17-year-old New Haven resident, tried running away but was apprehended by Officer William Pesanelli and arrested, according to Smith. The vehicle was found to be stolen out of Wallingford.

The teen was charged with first-degree larceny, interfering with a police officer, reckless driving, engaging an officer in pursuit, failure to drive in proper lane, operating without a license and failure to obey control signal.

The two other vehicles were last seen traveling southbound on Dixwell Avenue and Whitney Avenue, according to Smith.
