Discarded Cigarette Ignites Fire At Hamden Apartment
A deck was heavily damaged in the fire, officials said.
HAMDEN, CT — A discarded cigarette ignited a fire that heavily damaged a deck at a Hamden apartment on Friday afternoon, according to fire officials. Firefighters responded to a fire at 8100 Town Walk Drive at about 3:45 p.m. on April 12.
Neighbors in the apartment complex noticed a fire on a third-floor balcony and were able to alert the resident, who safely exited the apartment, according to officials. The fire was partially extinguished by the neighbors, officials said.
Firefighters extinguished the remaining fire and performed overhaul operations, officials said. Fire Inspector Nelson Hwang determined that the fire was caused by a cigarette discarded in a garden planter earlier in the day. The deck had heavy fire damage and the unit remains habitable, according to officials.
