Driver, 84, Sentenced In Fatal Hit-And-Run Crash In Hamden: Report

A 37-year-old woman was killed in the hit-and-run crash, according to police.

HAMDEN, CT — An elderly driver won’t serve prison time in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian in Hamden in 2022, according to the New Haven Register.

The Register reports Domenico Esperti, 84, of Hamden, received a 20-year suspended prison sentence earlier this month and was sentenced to five years of probation. The prison term was suspended, and he was released on the condition that he “does not operate any motor vehicle at all,” according to the Register.

Esperti was arrested Oct. 27, 2022 on a warrant in connection with the May 18, 2022 crash that killed 37-year-old Shauna Devlin on Paradise Avenue, according to police.

Responding officers found Devlin in the roadway, and she was pronounced dead at the scene, police said at the time.

Investigators found that Devlin was struck by a vehicle that left the scene after the collision. Police later recovered the suspect vehicle in the area of Hume Drive and determined that Esperti was operating the vehicle at the time of the accident, according to police.

Esperti was charged with evading responsibility and interfering with police. He pleaded guilty to evading responsibility – death, according to state judicial records.
