Hamden Considers Reversing Controversial Student Housing Permit Regulations

The P & Z Commission will hold a public hearing on an amendment that removes the requirement that landlords live with the students.

HAMDEN, CT — The Hamden Planning and Zoning Commission is poised to amend the regulations of its controversial student housing permit and remove the requirement that landlords live in the house with the students, according to the New Haven Register.

Kate Ramunni of the Register reports that dozens of complaints have been filed with the state Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities against the town’s regulations, including more than 40 that were filed before the amendment to require landlords to live with the students was passed last December.

The Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously approved the new regulations last December in an effort to cut down on the number of absentee landlords renting homes to students in residential neighborhoods. The action came after years of residents complaining about loud parties and other issues with Quinnipiac students living in residential neighborhoods.
