Hamden Resident Reaches Milestone With SCSU Women's Lacrosse

HAMDEN, CT — Hamden's Samantha Cozzolino, a junior on the Southern Connecticut State University women’s lacrosse team, became the eighth player in program history to join the 100-point club with three points in the Owls' 14-10 victory over AIC last week. Also in the victory, classmate Brianna Grande, of West Hartford, set a school record with nine caused turnovers. She also finished with 10 groundballs, the second-best single-game mark in school history.

The Owls improved to 3-5 (2-3 in the NE-10) with the win, while AIC fell to 3-6 (0-5 NE-10). Read more on the win from SCSU Athletics below:

KEY PERFORMERS:

- Freshman goalie Laura Morton (Somers, Conn.) posted a career-high 19 saves in the outing.

- Nicole Healey (Milford, Conn.) had a team-high three goals, while Cozzolino (two goals, assist) and Carolynn Keal (Southington, Conn.) also had three points, the latter with a goal and two assists.

- Stephanie Seymour (North Branford, Conn.), Hailey Prindle-Nelson (Sharon, Conn.), Hailey Gordon (Niantic, Conn.) and Taylor Portelinha (Woodbridge, Conn.) also each chipped in two goals apiece in the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

- Neither team led by more than a goal until the final minute of the opening half. Trailing 5-4 in the latter stages of the first frame, Cozzolino, Gordon and Healey each found the back of the net to give the Owls a 7-5 lead into the half.

- Cozzolino's 100th career point came on a goal just 42 seconds into the second half to make it 8-5. AIC scored less than a minute later to get back within two, but Healey, Portelinha and Prindle-Nelson potted goals in a span of 32 seconds to build an 11-6 lead, and the Owls never led by fewer than three the rest of the way.
